In greenhouse saffron cultivation, the most important factors are light, temperature, and humidity, all of which must be completely adjusted. The important point is that saffron bulbs should never come into direct contact with water, and we only supply the water we need through humidifiers using automatic humidifiers.

Greenhouse saffron cultivation has become popular in recent years, especially in Iran. Some farmers have announced the production efficiency of three kilograms of dried saffron per ton of saffron onions in the early years of greenhouse construction.

Benefits of growing saffron greenhouse

1. Easy to harvest

2. Low cost of production

3. Lack of water

4. High grade of saffron produced

5. Control the growth of bulbs by adjusting the humidity, temperature, and light entering the saffron greenhouse environment

According to studies conducted by expert technicians in the laboratory, the grade of saffron (crocin) grown in the saffron greenhouse is at least 265, while saffron with a production-grade of 320 can be seen in this environment. Saffron grade is one of the most important factors for buying saffron.

Stages of saffron greenhouse  cultivation

Step 1: Prepare high quality and large onions

To prepare the saffron onion, you should prepare large onion in the middle of June to weigh more than 15 grams.

The preparation of weak and light onions will greatly reduce the production performance of saffron, so it is recommended not to use onions under 15 grams in the saffron greenhouse. After preparing the onions in June, the onions should be stored in a completely cool environment away from sunlight until early September. During this period, moisture should not reach the onion, and the temperature of the onion environment should be a maximum of 13 degrees Celsius. It should be above zero to prevent it from growing and breaking its summer sleep.

Second stage: preparation of saffron cultivation hall

Preparing saffron bulbs for cultivation

At this stage, a roofed and healthy place for growing onions should be prepared:

Conditions of saffron cultivation place in the saffron greenhouse

  • 1. The environment should be away from environmental pollution.
  • 2. It has a window for aeration and control of temperature and humidity.
  • 3. To cool the hall, you should use an air conditioner, so that the available device can cool the environment to a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius above zero.
  • 4. The hall should be equipped with a fan heater to heat the environment during the flower harvest stage

After preparing the desired place, floor shelves (4 or 5 floors) with a height of 40 to 50 cm should be constructed. Next to the shelves, wooden floors with a length and width of 100 cm by 70 cm should be provided.

These three shelves can be made of wood as well as metal. The width of the shelves should be a maximum of 70 cm and the distance between the shelves is enough to use as a corridor 80 cm.

In a hall for growing saffron greenhouse in an area of 100 square meters with 5-story shelves, 6 tons of saffron onions are needed.

Third stage: transfer of saffron onions to the cultivation hall

Disinfect the culture hall

Before moving the onion into the hall, the hall should be disinfected with disinfectants and prevent contaminated foreign materials from entering the hall.

Then separate the onions from each other and clean them of soil, excess straw, and other excess material.

Disinfect saffron onions

At this stage, a solution of fungicide (carbendazim fungicide at the rate of two per thousand) and acaricide (propargetic acaricide at the rate of one and a half per thousand) should be prepared in a tank and the onions should be soaked in this solution for a few minutes. Put until the onions are completely disinfected.

Picking onions on the floors

After disinfecting and drying the onions in the shade, the onions are picked in the pre-prepared floors and the floors are transferred into the hall, at this stage, which takes place in late September, the air humidity To 80%.

Also, the ambient temperature is kept below 13 degrees Celsius for 7 days, this action with 80% humidity causes the onions to wake up from summer sleep and start to grow.

At this stage, the bulbs begin to wake up and grow their crowns. Weak leaves should be prevented from growing. This operation is done by hand and prevents the onion from losing the stored energy and causes it to rise. Produce efficiency.

Enjoy harvesting saffron flowers in your saffron greenhouse

Saffron Greenhouse flowers ready to harvest

After the growth of all the bulbs, we bring the ambient temperature to 17 degrees Celsius, this temperature is the best temperature for saffron flowering. As soon as the first saffron flower grows, we start harvesting the flowers. This process continues for 7 to 10 days from the time the flower appears until all the bulbs produce all their flowers.

Each onion (15 to 20 grams of onion) produces an average of 12 to 14 flowers in saffron greenhouse conditions.

Step 4: Transfer saffron bulbs to the ground

After harvesting, the onions should be transferred to the pre-prepared soil as soon as possible, And when transferring to the ground, care must be taken not to damage the onion leaves and also not to bury them in the ground. After transferring the bulbs to the soil, other steps should be continued exactly like soil cultivation and micronutrients and other elements of the plant should be provided to the plant by irrigation and foliar application.
